The Proposal is charming and very funny. Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock star in this lovable romantic comedy.
Margaret Tate (Bullock) is a powerful editor-in-chief at a book publishing company in New York City. As a Canadian, Margaret finds out that she must leave the United States after she violates her Visa. So, being the pushy boss that she is, she forces her Executive Assistant Andrew Paxton (the gorgeous Reynolds) to marry her. He agrees to it after she threatens to fire him.
Mr. Gilbertson (Denis O'Hare), a government employee, is onto their little scheme though and threatens to deport Margaret to Canada and send Andrew to prison if they're lying about their relationship. Once Andrew hears this, he tells her that he wants to be promoted to editor. She reluctantly agrees since she's desperate. In order to make the engagement authentic, the two fly to Andrew's hometown in Alaska for his Grandma Annie's (the adorable Betty White) 90th birthday party.
The Paxton family is thrilled to have Andrew home, since he's been unable to come home for three years due to work. Andrew's dad (Craig T. Nelson) is especially puzzled as to why he would want to marry the boss that he's hated for so long, and he wants him to come home and run the family businesses. The Paxtons end up getting excited for the wedding, and they talk them into getting married that weekend.
As you probably guess, Andrew and Margaret learn more about each other and eventually fall in love. Reynolds and Bullock have great chemistry. The film is both sweet and laugh-out-loud funny - and what's there not to love about that?
